The Delight of My Heart

“Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart; for I am called by your name, O Lord, God of hosts.” – Jeremiah 15:16

Do you remember receiving notes from friends in school? Long before technology reached the point of text messaging and instant messaging, friends would pass notes to one another in school. It could be a few words, a couple of sentences, or pages of notes that you would share with your friends. Accompanying the note was a special feeling of happiness because you were the chosen recipient of the note.

What if we had that same happiness about reading scripture? In Jeremiah 15, as Jeremiah wrestles with his calling and complains to God, he receives areassurance and says these words: “Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart.” We notice in this passage that Jeremiah 1) discovers God’s words, 2) ingests God’s words, and 3) God’s words became “a joy and the delight of [Jeremiah’s] heart.”

As we have studied through the Bible this year, my prayer for each of you reading this has been that you will discover God’s Word, ingest God’s Word — i.e., allow it to become part of you — so that you may know the joy and heart’s delight that is found in following Jesus. I hope you will make that your prayer as well.

Have a great weekend and I look forward to being with you in worship online beginning Sunday at 9 AM!

P.S. Yesterday, Heather Woods and her Kids Ministry Team spent the entire day in the HOT sun taking Vacation Bible School to the children in our community. We saw nearly 75 kids at 7 different locations as they were entertained with silly skits, participated in crafts and games, and received additional material to continue to fun at home. You can check out pictures on the Royston Kids’ Ministry Facebook page. When you see Heather, her husband, Woody, Janet Brown, and Candy Smith, please be sure and tell them thank you for helping us share God’s love with our youngest disciples in Royston!
