From the Pastor

Rev. Dr. John W. Mattox

Rev. Dr. John W. Mattox is passionate about proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ and walking with congregations in renewal and reconciliation through Scripture and worship.

A native of Roopville, Georgia, John is the son of the late John and Freda Mattox. He was baptized and confirmed at Roopville United Methodist Church in July 1986, marking the beginning of a lifelong journey of faith. He earned his B.A. in Philosophy, Religion, and Art from the University of West Georgia before serving the people of Florida for six years through the Agency for Healthcare Administration and the Department of Health, working with the Florida Boards of Medicine and Nursing.

John answered God’s call to ministry and was ordained as an Elder in the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church in 2009. He holds both the Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. For over a decade, he has focused his personal research and writing on the Gospel of Mark, while also drawing inspiration from his life verses: Ephesians 1:3–11, Philippians 2:5–11, and Hebrews 13:1–8, 15–16.

John has been joyfully married to Rev. Katie Mattox, pastor of Princeton UMC in Athens, Georgia, for more than 30 years. Together they share life with their adult son, Wesley, and two lively Boston Terriers, Molly and Macaroni. In his free time, John enjoys music, reading, cooking, and writing.

At the heart of John’s ministry is the conviction that God’s Word still shapes lives, renews churches, and reconciles communities today. He is excited to serve with Royston First UMC in living out the hope and promise of Christ for this community and beyond.
