The second Sunday in May is a day that is usually set aside to remember and honor our mothers. This national holiday was first celebrated in a Methodist church in West Virginia in 1908, and became a national holiday under President Woodrow Wilson in 1914. It is a day to show our mother’s how much we appreciate the work they do, and honor them for the sacrifices they have made.
But Mother’s Day can also be a difficult day for some people. There are people who want to be mothers, but are not able to do so because of infertility. There are some who have recently lost their mother, and there are others who did not have a good relationship with their mom. As we remember and celebrate the impact of mothers, we also remember all of those women who have been mother figures in our lives.
One of the ways we will honor our mothers this year is through the Wesley Woods Mother’s Day Offering. Wesley Woods is a network of 10 senior living facilities throughout North Georgia, including two facilities in Athens – Lanier Gardens and Talmage Terrace. These facilities are owned and operated by the United Methodist Church, and your donation will help provide on-site chaplains, an innovative wellness program, and financial assistance to residents. The Wesley Woods Mother’s Day Offering is a wonderful way to honor your mother this Mother’s Day.
You can make your contribution to the church with the designation “Mother’s Day Offering,” give directly to Wesley Woods at mothersdaygift.org, or text MOTHER to 243725. Michele and I will be making a contribution in honor of our mothers, and I hope you will consider doing the same for this wonderful and life-giving ministry that helps provide care for so many.
Enjoy the warm weather and God bless!
